I Am Not The Last is inspired by that stage of life defined by quiet goodbyes to people we love: helping children step out into the world while, at the same time, gently helping aging parents retreat from it.

I come from a diasporic family shaped by generational movement, so I know how life can take us far from where we began. And as a parent myself, I often wonder whether the pattern will repeat itself. That my kids too may emigrate on their own, as I did, as their grandparents did before me, and their ancestors before them.

What kind of world will they inherit when they get there?

Will they find familiar community there, echoes of home?

These questions find their way into this story about family, displacement and the uncertainty of life beyond our understanding. It comes from that bittersweet space between beginnings and endings, looking back with love and gratitude at the people who brought us into the world, while looking forward into the unknown future with concern and hope. And from recognising that sometimes, loving someone means helping them find their way forward, even when it means letting them go.
